Essential Oil Diffusers FAQ: Your Ultimate Guide
We hope you are enjoying your aromatherapy journey! Here are some common essential oil diffusers faq
What is an essential oil diffuser?
It is a device that releases a fine mist of spray particles into the air. The purpose is to get some health benefits, enjoy its relaxing properties, and freshen the air.
Essential oil particles are mixed with water inside the aroma diffuser, and the smaller molecules are released into the surrounding environment. Aromatherapy uses essential oils (made from natural or artificial ingredients) for a calming effect.
How does an oil diffuser work?
An oil diffuser’s tank is filled with water and a few drops of essential oil. Once turned on, the disc inside the device vibrates to create ultrasonic waves. This movement produces heat and breaks down the particles in the oil and water mixture. Tiny droplets are released as a fine mist spray, so the air you inhale smells pure bliss.
Each microscopic particle contains the goodness of the essential oil. Breathing in the air infused with this mixture will give you health benefits and a sense of tranquillity.
What are the different types of aroma oil diffusers?
There are four main categories of oil diffusers: ultrasonic, heat, evaporative and nebulizing. All these types work on the principle of releasing a fine spray of oil and water mixture into the air. The main difference is the process through which they emit the fine mist.
- Ultrasonic diffusers: As the name indicates, an ultrasonic oil diffuser uses vibrations from electronic frequencies to create ultrasonic waves. These waves then diffuse the oil-and-water mixture to the surrounding environment.
- Heat diffusers: They employ the principle of heat (typically using a flame) to heat the essential oil. The evaporated mixture penetrates the surrounding air.
- Evaporative diffusers contain a pad soaked in the water-and-oil mixture. The pad blows the evaporated particles into the air using a wind fan.
- Nebulizers use atomization or force to break the essential oil particles into smaller particles. They do not need water for dilution. The atoms are then forced out of a small opening into neighbouring air.
What essential oils can be used in a diffuser?
There are no hard and fast rules about which essential oil you can use in a diffuser. You can use any essential oil or experiment with a few until you find your favourite. What works best for you will depend on what you are trying to achieve—whether it’s relaxation, fragrance, medicinal benefits, or ease of symptoms. A range of options is available. Some popular essential oil diffuser options include lavender, rosemary, ylang-ylang, orange, bergamot, frankincense, eucalyptus, and lemon.
It is always a good idea to test with a smaller quantity to see if you like the fragrance and check for any adverse reactions.
How do you choose the right essential oil for your diffuser?
Before choosing the oil, you should know what results you are aiming for. Each essential oil possesses its unique qualities. The good thing is that for any result you want, you have a variety of options to choose from.
Selecting a pure and organic essential oil is always preferable as you wouldn’t need to worry about any side effects. Synthetic additives may make the oil more fragrant, but they have downsides, too. The therapeutic properties of pure oils are worth your investment.
You also need to consider the room size where you want the aroma to spread. If the area is more extensive, a diffuser for a large room will be a better choice.
Can I use fragrance oils in my diffuser?
How much water should I use in an oil diffuser?
Each diffuser has a different water capacity. The capacity is listed on the diffuser, or a maximum fill line is marked on the device.
You should only add water up to the fill line of your aroma oil diffuser. If unsure or your device does not list the water quantity, add roughly a cup. Overfilling the diffuser leads to poorer long-term results.
Each diffuser lists the quantity of water and the number of drops of essential oil to be added to a given amount. Once you have added the water and essential oil, you can close the lid and turn on the diffuser.
How often should I clean my oil diffuser?
Oil diffusers should be emptied and cleaned at least once every fortnight and deep-cleaned at least once a month.
Some people empty their oil diffuser after each use to avoid mould building up from water sitting in it. If emptying, wipe the surface with a clean cloth and let it dry completely before putting the lid back on and putting the machine away.
Wipe the surface with a water-and-vinegar solution if you use a different essential oil. Regular cleaning ensures its long life and optimal results. If a diffuser is not routinely cleaned, mould that develops in it will also impact the mist and release harmful bacteria into the air.
What are the benefits of using an oil diffuser?
Everyone swears by its main advantage: a profound sense of relaxation. It is excellent self-care equipment because it releases muscle tension and calms nerves. The therapeutic benefits also extend to an improvement in mood.
An aroma oil diffuser is a great way to ease medical symptoms and improve immunity. Many people also use it to improve the quality of their sleep. Its use has also been associated with improved focus and alertness.
Are there any safety concerns with oil diffusers?
Some people may experience difficulty in breathing if the space is not well-ventilated. If you prefer keeping the doors and windows closed while using the device, air the room later to ventilate it properly.
Safety concerns are also high for people with existing breathing issues, lung dysfunction or heart issues. If you have any of these (or similar) medical conditions, please consult your physician before using an essential oil diffuser. If you experience any irritation or allergic reaction, discontinue use immediately.
Undiluted essential oils can be inhaled, causing a safety concern. Therefore, we always recommend following the dilution guidelines and mixing the essential oils and water in prescribed quantities for optimal results. Also, do not overfill the diffuser higher than the maximum fill line.
How long can I run an oil diffuser?
It would be best to run your oil diffuser for half an hour and then turn it off for at least an hour before using it again. Even if you prefer a more intense aroma, running the aroma oil diffuser for longer durations in one go is not ideal.
You can run your device for an hour using a basic low-scent essential oil. However, if you are using a solid oil with intense properties, do not extend the duration of use by more than an hour.
Many of the latest aroma diffusers have automatic settings where you can set a timer to switch them off after an interval.
Can oil diffusers help with allergies or respiratory issues?
Depending on the essential oil you use in your diffuser, you might experience relief from respiratory issues. Any oil with decongestant properties will help improve breathing and thus alleviate any breathing problems. Eucalyptus, frankincense, lavender, lemon, and peppermint are good options for such issues.
However, we always recommend that anyone with asthma, breathing issues, heart problems, lung dysfunction, or similar problems discuss these with their doctor before using an essential oil diffuser. Monitor your symptoms during and after diffusing, and discontinue use if you experience discomfort.
What is the best placement for an oil diffuser in a room?
The ideal location for an aroma oil diffuser in the room is a central spot. It’s a good idea to place it on a center table or a shelf, but if you can put it a little high up, go for it.
Please keep it on a level surface, but do not put it where the fine mist spray will go straight into your eyes or mouth. Also, check where the direct spray is falling. If the constant spray could damage the surface, consider relocating it to a different spot.
We recommend keeping your machine away from direct sunlight or other heat sources. Also, it would be best not to put it directly in front of a fan. Both heat and the fan will evaporate the oil quicker, and the aroma will fade away faster.
Can I use a diffuser while sleeping?
Generally, using an aroma diffuser overnight is safe because the oil is diluted. If you use high-quality essential oils with natural ingredients, you will only get goodness from them.
It is recommended that a diffuser be used with an auto timer setting so that it turns off after intervals. The relaxing properties will help you sleep better, while the intervals between uses will help with air circulation.
What are the differences between ultrasonic and nebulizing diffusers?
The main difference is how they operate. Ultrasonic diffusers use vibrations to break down the molecules in the oil-and-water mixture. The broken-down particles are then diffused in the room as a fine spray. On the other hand, nebulizing diffusers use atomization to break down the particles. Once broken down into smaller atoms, they are forced out of a small opening into neighbouring air.
The other difference is the area of coverage—the mist from an ultrasonic device reaches far and wide compared to concentrated atoms from a nebulizer. It is also important to note that nebulizers are more expensive than ultrasonic options.
The resulting aroma from a nebulizer is much more robust, while the scent from its ultrasonic counterpart is diffused and lighter. Ultrasonic devices need regular maintenance to ensure the water mixture does not result in mould, while nebulizers need less maintenance.
How much essential oil should I add to a diffuser?
The number of drops of essential oil to be diluted in a given quantity of water depends on the capacity of your oil diffuser. Generally, the dilution is written on the essential oil and the diffuser.
If you are unsure, here are some estimates:
- In a 100ml diffuser, use 3 to 5 drops of your preferred essential oil.
- In a 200ml diffuser, use 6 to 10 drops of your preferred essential oil.
- In a 300ml diffuser, use 9 to 12 drops of your preferred essential oil.
- In a 400ml diffuser, use 12 to 15 drops of your preferred essential oil.
- In a 500ml diffuser, use 15 to 20 drops of your preferred essential oil.
If you are using a single oil, go for roughly 5 to 10 drops mixed with water. However, if you combine multiple oils, do not exceed 2 to 3 drops per oil. If you use a specific oil as a carrier, the carrier oil should make up 75% to 85% of the mixture, while the fragrance oil should not exceed 15% to 25% of the total.
As you proceed on your aromatherapy journey, you will understand what works best for you. If your device covers a broader area, you may opt for something more substantial and lasting to help the fragrance spread evenly in all room corners.
Are oil diffusers safe for pets?
Oil diffusers are generally safe for pets if kept at a suitable distance. Choose a high place that is out of easy reach for your pet. Pets have a stronger sense of smell than humans, so please ensure the room is well-ventilated if you have any pets.
Pet-safe essential oils include tagetes, lavender, rosemary, ginger, chamomile, bergamot, myrrh, and frankincense. Avoid essential oils like peppermint, citrus, tea tree, and cinnamon, as they are not recommended for use near pets. Also, set the automatic timer on your aroma diffuser to turn off the device after a set interval.
If your pet has breathing issues, please consult a vet before using an essential oil diffuser in your home. Also, watch for any changes in behaviour during or after using your oil diffuser.
Can oil diffusers be used with synthetic oils?
While synthetic oils can be used in oil diffusers, it is not a recommended practice for specific reasons. The first reason is that synthetic oils contain artificial ingredients that may lead to health problems or other side effects. Second, it may violate the warranty terms of your device.
Another reason is that you won’t notice any issues in the short term, and the machine will work as intended, but if you use synthetic oils as a daily practice, the device may gradually get clogged.
Also, synthetic oils’ petrochemical components may trigger allergic reactions. Inhaling particles released by breaking down the petrochemicals will gradually harm one’s lungs and breathing.
What are the most popular essential oils for diffusing?
Lavender is the best-selling essential oil worldwide because of its wide range of health benefits. Peppermint, patchouli, rosemary, and eucalyptus follow shortly after.
Other popular essential oils include lemon, tea tree, ylang-ylang, rosemary, lemongrass, orange and frankincense. Many people also love jasmine, sandalwood, chamomile, geranium and bergamot.
How can I make my essential oil blends for the diffuser?
As you progress on your aromatherapy journey, you will become more confident experimenting with various oil combinations to see what works best. Essentially, you need to select a carrier oil or base oil (which will be used in larger quantities) and an essential oil of your choice (you will only need a few drops of this one). If you mix them roughly, add 30 to 50 drops of essential oil for every half cup of carrier oil.
It is essential to stir the blend well and then let it rest for about a day. This step enables the mixture to blend in and sit together, infusing the properties and bringing out the best in them.
You can use any unscented and lightweight oil as a carrier oil. Fractionated coconut oil and almond oil remain popular choices.
If mixing three oils, follow the 30:50:20 ratio for the top, middle, and base notes. For instance, if you use five drops of the middle note, you only need three drops of the top note and two drops of the base note.
What features should I look for in an oil diffuser?
Choosing an essential oil diffuser depends on your preferences and what you want. Here are a few considerations to narrow down your choices:
- Size or capacity is one of the most important considerations, as it will determine how long you can use your machine without needing a refill.
- Coverage area: The size of the room or area you want to cover with the device also matters greatly.
- Physical appearance: Many different looks are available to match them with your place’s existing décor.
- Maintenance: Four types of aroma diffusers require varying maintenance levels, so choose wisely based on how keen you are on cleaning your machine.
Timer or vapour output: The timer lets you determine how often you want your machine to release the output. You can choose between short bursts of mist every few seconds or one burst a minute. - Budget: A variety of options are available based on your budget constraints.
- Shut-off feature: If you plan to set and forget your device so that it turns off after a set time, this is another feature to look out for.
- Noise level: Since the machine will run in the background for a considerable time, you should also consider how much noise disturbance you can easily bear.

How do I troubleshoot a diffuser that’s not working?
One common problem is a blocked spray hole. If the device is not cleaned regularly, the spray head can become clogged and stop working. The solution is to clean the area from where the spray comes, and it will start working without any issues.
One usual issue is a loose power connection. Please double-check that the device is getting power by removing the switch and inserting it again. Some diffusers also automatically turn off the power without sufficient water. This ensures the device’s longevity and avoids overheating. Ensure enough water and oil mixture before turning on the machine again.
Low water and too much water can be issues. Remove some of the mixes if the water mixture exceeds the maximum/top line, and the machine should usually start working. If your machine is leaking, your first step should be to ensure all parts are assembled correctly. Also, remember to let your machine dry out for a day or two after a thorough clean.
Can I use an oil diffuser in a small space?
An oil diffuser can be used in a small space if well-ventilated. If you want to contain the aroma and mist spray in a small space, air the room thoroughly after use.
For smaller spaces, it is recommended to use fewer drops of essential oil to avoid a heavy, concentrated feel.
